Mark Lauby to Participate on GMD Technical Conference Panels
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mark Lauby, NERC’s senior vice president and chief reliability officer, will participate in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission-led technical conference on Geomagnetic Disturbance Events on March 1.
The technical conference is being convened to discuss the Reliability Standard for Transmission System Planned Performance for GMD Events on issues identified in the notice of proposed rulemaking and subsequent comments. Conference panelists will discuss GMD-related topics, including benchmarks, vulnerability assessments and monitoring of related parameters. Lauby will take part in the three panel discussions:
·         9:15 a.m. – Benchmark GMD Event(s) Definition
·         12:45 p.m. – Vulnerability Assessments
·         2:45 p.m.  – Monitoring and Future Work
The 1989 GMD Event that caused a blackout of the Hydro Québec system provided important lessons to the electricity sector. Since that time, the sector has made significant progress in reducing vulnerability to geomagnetic storms. In response to NERC’s 2012 report, Effects of Geomagnetic Disturbances on the Bulk Power System, and FERC’s May 16, 2013 order directing NERC to develop standards to address risks to reliability caused by GMD, NERC and industry developed two GMD standards.
