GridSecCon 2012

More than 280 participants attended the second annual conference, GridSecCon 2012, on October 17-18 in San Diego. GridSecCon 2012 included opening keynote remarks by Gerry Cauley, president and chief executive officer of NERC; and Admiral Thad Allen, retired U.S. Coast Guard commandant and senior vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton. More than 20 speakers—including Department of Defense Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs Paul Stockton, and Department of Homeland Security Deputy Undersecretary for Cybersecurity Mark Weatherford—discussed topics ranging from strategic policy discussions affecting the electricity industry to tactical measures and best practices to reduce risk and better protect critical infrastructure. Prior to the conference, more than 90 participants received training in workshops from Lofty Perch, Idaho National Laboratory, and SANS Institute.

Conference goals included:

  • Build on NERC’s mission to ensure the reliability of the North American bulk power system through education and training;
  • Discuss and provide solutions to emerging industrial control system security issues;
  • Deliver expert analysis on social engineering and phishing attacks;
  • Focus strategically on public-private partnerships;
  • Provide an update on the Electricity Sector Information Sharing and Analysis Center and issue a call for increased industry participation and communication.
