In July, NERC, the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center (E-ISAC), and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) will host a joint informational webinar to highlight areas focused on integrating cyber and physical security with conventional engineering practices (security integration). The webinar will include presentations from each organization describing various activities underway that support this broader objective and expand on concepts presented in the ERO Enterprise's recently published technical report, Cyber-Informed Transmission Planning. This report outlines a roadmap for integrating cyber threat simulations into transmission planning activities and recommends actions to enhance and expand the range of contingencies studied long-term planning assessments and to determine applicable corrective actions that could create a more cyber-resilient bulk power system moving forward.
The ERO Enterprise's work on these topics represents one of the first focused applications of Cyber-Informed Engineering. INL is leading the development of philosophy and practices to identify and mitigate the inherent risks of digital technology by including cybersecurity as a core element of engineering risk management.
These studies also rely on an understanding of the threat landscape and the various cyber-attack scenarios transmission planners should consider. The E-ISAC has ongoing efforts that support information sharing and threat analysis and develops specific, actionable products for industry to mitigate cyber incidents. Membership in the E-ISAC is open to all North American asset owners and operators and includes access to its secure portal, regular monthly briefings, workshops, and special event webinars to improve awareness on cyber and physical threats to industry.
