Failure Modes and Mechanisms Webinar

The NERC Event Analysis Subcommittee, in collaboration with the ERO Event Analysis Program, invites you to an opportunity to learn about failure modes and mechanisms (FMM).

The FMM approach is used to analyze common types of BES substation equipment to determine their main failure modes and mechanisms. Collecting and analyzing equipment failure data is intended to identify and trend potential risks/impacts to the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES)  in order to improve reliability.

  • A Failure Mode is what gets your attention that equipment is not in a normal state.
  • A Failure Mechanism is the catalyst and physical path to that failure mode.
  • Equipment Failures have logical cause-and-effect relationships behind them.
  • Failure Mechanisms are detectable. Many can be stopped, or at least slowed down so they can be corrected before causing a failure.

In this webinar, members of the FMM Task Force will be discussing FMM methodology and provide some discrete samples from FMM diagrams. All registered entities and other stakeholders are invited to attend.
